Gregory Alan Whitcomb, 48 of Red Wing, died unexpectedly on January 3, 2013 at his home. He was born on August 7, 1964 in Harrisburg, PA to Paul and Nancy (Piper) Whitcomb. He attended Cedar Cliff High School in Camp Hill, PA graduating in 1982. After graduation, he went to Iowa Wesleyan College graduating in 1988 with a degree in Music Education. He received his masters degree in Choral Conducting in 1993 from Western Illinois University. On July 15, 1989, he married Amy Malloy in Burlington, IA. He taught music at Danville Community School in Danville, IA. , was a band instructor at Labette Community College in Parsons, KS and most recently taught elementary music for the Rochester School District. He enjoyed singing, playing guitar and the trombone. In August of 2010 his family moved to Red Wing. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Red Wing Golf Club. He enjoyed gourmet cooking, golfing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family
Gregory is survived by his wife, Amy; three children, Paul, Alexandra and Joshua Whitcomb all at home; his mother, Nancy Whitcomb of Mechanicsburg, PA; one sister, Vicki Whitcomb of Mechanicsburg, PA; his mother-in-law, Mary Lou Malloy of West Burlington, IA; and numerous extended family members. He is preceded in death by his father, Paul Whitcomb.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the children's education, and may be sent to John Williams, 2228 Madison Avenue, Burlington, IA 52601. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel in Red Wing, MN.
