Gregory G. Haugen age 79 of Zumbrota died on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at the Zumbrota Health Services surrounded by his family. Funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota with Father Bruce Peterson officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Catholic Church Cemetery in Zumbrota. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, January 10, 2011 from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel.

Gregory Gene Haugen was born on the family farm in Pine Island Township, on December 22, 1931 to Orrin and Doris (nee Lally) Haugen. He attended Lena Grade School and Zumbrota High School. Always active, he gained some notoriety while still a child for driving his father�'¢?TMs automobile, even though he couldn�'¢?TMt be seen above the steering wheel! He was inducted into the U.S. Army on November 13, 1952. He served in BTRY B 253rd ARMD FA BN DIV ARTY 6 ARMD DIV based out of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he served as a cook and mess sergeant until his honorable discharge on November 12, 1954. He went on to be a self-employed owner/operator of a restaurant in Mazeppa as well as a truck driver and farmer. He began working for the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 1966 and worked for them until he retired in 1996. He worked part time for MN DOT until 2002. During most of his time, he was engaged in farming on the family farm where he was often seen plowing the fields with one of his grandsons on his lap. He married Marcella Sommer in July 4, 1952. They later divorced. He is survived by four of his five children, Orrin (Dorothy) Haugen and Kent (Monica) Haugen both of Zumbrota, Renee (Jeff) Wiskow of Goodhue, and Tammy (Tom) Poncelet of Mazeppa; sisters Yvonne Peper of Cottage Grove and Susan (Laverne) Peterman of Zumbrota; twelve grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Cecil; son, Lance; two grandchildren, Bryce Haugen and Jamie O'Reilly and great grandson, Matthew Heitmann. The family prefers memorials to ALS.
