Gordon LeRoy Selander, 88 of Red Wing, died Saturday, November 2, 2013 under hospice care at his home in the Downtown Plaza. He was born April 21, 1925 in Vasa Township, son of Harris and Lillian (Peterson) Selander. Gordon attended and graduated from Red Wing Central High School. In 1950, he entered the U.S. Army where he served as Corporal and in 1952 he was honorably discharged at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. Gordon married Bernice Venekamp on May 23, 1953 in Ruthton, MN. He made his living for 32 years as an assembly man for Central Research. He retired in 1990. Bernice died October 12, 2009. On October 9, 2010 Gordon married Phyllis Ihrke, who survived him. Gordon was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Golden K Kiwanis club.
Gordon is survived by his three children, son Stan (Gladys) Selander of Ramsey, MN and their children, Nathan ((Annie) Colin, Karyn, and Clark)), Kristen (Eric) Mattsson, and Karl (Amanda); daughter Sherri (Peter) Speerstra of Pigeon Falls, WI and their children Matt and Larissa; and daughter Louise (Ron) Christenson of Eau Claire, WI and their children Sara and Shad; sister, Marcia Carlson; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; his parents; brother, Stanley; and sister, Carol.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Memorials preferred to Mayo Red Wing Hospice or First Lutheran Church.
