Gordon Erick Johnson

February 10, 1928 — October 22, 2019

Gordon Erick Johnson, 91, of Hudson, Wisconsin died Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Comforts of Home Assisted Living in Hudson. He was born February 10, 1928 at his home in Pine Creek, Maiden Rock Township to E. Theodore and Helen Florence (Weiken) Johnson. He attended schools in Chippewa Falls. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. He worked as a welder and bridge builder for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 42 years. He married H. Lorraine Swanson on November 17, 1950. Together they raised 4 children. She passed away in 1987. He married Joanne Morris in 1988 and the couple later divorced. He was a member of the Leo C. Peterson Post 54 and the Burnson-Lillyblad VFW Post 1218.

Having been raised in an orphanage, Gordon learned many useful life skills that served him well. From cooking, sewing and crocheting to wood working, welding and wall paper hanging; there wasn't much that Gordon couldn't do. He maintained a depression-era work ethic that kept him busy long after his official retirement from the railroad. He continued to do lawn care well into his mid 80's. He loved to keep busy and never sat idle for long and would always say, "People die in bed, ya know." When he could no longer work outside of the home, he decided to take up quilting, piecing more than 20 quilts to give as gifts or donate to charity. He always had a craft or a project he was working on. However, his very favorite past time was dancing. He loved to go out dancing, sometimes as often as five times a week, meeting many, good, life-time friends.

He will be missed by many, including his four children; Carol Grant of Winona, Joyce (Larry) Starks of Cumberland, Wisc., Richard (Wanda) Johnson of Red Wing and Susan (Jack) Florin of Minnesota City; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Marlee) Jensen of Necedah, Wisc.; special friend, Rita Hampton of Spring Valley; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; one granddaughter; Theresa Johnson; two great-grandsons, Kelly Johnson and Damian Bostrom; and two great-great grandsons, Zach and Taylor Johnson; 6 brothers and 5 sisters; and son-in-law, Dan Grant.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, November 8, 2019 at Oakwood Cemetery. A celebration of Gordon's life will continue at the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post 54 following the burial. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
