Gloria Kay Peterson

February 26, 1943 — September 16, 2015

Gloria Kay Peterson, 72, of Red Wing, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born February 26, 1943, in Spring Grove, Minnesota to Leon and Catherine (Magnuson) Rostvold. She graduated from Lake City High School in 1960 and worked as a dental hygienist for Dr. Flemming before marrying Gerald "Jerry" Bowen. Together they had four children and later divorced. While raising her children, Gloria spent her time volunteering in various capacities--from being a marching band parent, helping with the ABCD Club and other church and school activities, to singing and playing at the local nursing homes. On July 11, 1986, she was united in marriage to Elroy Peterson and together they shared over 29 wonderful years. One of their favorite activities was camping with their grandkids and traveling in their motorhome visiting family. Gloria did work for the Life-Line Program through the local hospital for many years and was also employed at Mayo Clinic Health System in Red Wing at the Information Desk. In addition, she may have been spotted at the hospital gift shop, as she was a long-time volunteer for the hospital ladies' auxiliary.
Gloria's musical talents were abundant and well-known. As a young girl she learned the accordion from her father, and later she picked up the guitar and piano. She played in the Key Notes Band, First Lutheran Praise Band and she often sang either as a soloist or in the church choir. At First Lutheran Church where she was a member, she also volunteered as a Eucharistic minister and was one of the first women ushers. Aside from church, she was a part of the Christian Woman's Club, prayer group, bridge group, the Birthday Club and woman's golf league. Gloria enjoyed creating hand-made greeting cards--having never missed a grandchild's birthday and was known to make one of the best blueberry cheesecakes around. Last September she was able to enjoy the trip of a lifetime with her dear friends, traveling to Norway.
Gloria will be remembered for many things, but her strong faith being most important. It carried her through life, evident in the way she lived and interacted with others, it's strength never wavering, even in her last days.
She is survived by her husband, Elroy of Red Wing; 4 children, Jim (Martha) Bowen of Cannon Falls, Kellie (Scott) LeClair of Eagan, Joe (Stephanie) Bowen of Cannon Falls and John (Lori) Bowen of Red Wing; 3 step-children, Julie (Bill) Hoeft of Bloomington, Todd (Carrie) Peterson of Red Wing and Tim (Terri) Peterson of Wabasha; 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Rostvold of La Crosse and many other close friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Gary and a sister, Lana.
