Gloria Ann Bixby

July 4, 2017 — October 18, 2010

Gloria Ann (Hulit) Bixby, 93, died in her sleep at St. Brigid's at Hi Park early this past Monday morning, October 18, 2010. She had been a resident at St. Brigid's since November of 2006.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 4, 1917; her parents were John Atwater Hulit and Blanche Wiley Hulit. She had one brother, John II, who predeceased her in January, 2009.

She grew up in Villa Park, Illinois, where she met and married John N. Bixby on September 16, 1938; Dr. Bixby, who was a food scientist, died in Red Wing on October 17, 1993 at age 78. They had three sons who survive: John Bixby, Jr. from Brattleboro, Vermont; Howard Hulit Bixby from Houghton, Michigan; and Robert Wiley Bixby from Red Wing. She had five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Prior to moving to Red Wing, Gloria and her family lived in Elmhurst, Illinois; Madison, Wisconsin; Geneva, Illinois; Culver, Indiana; and Minneapolis, MN.. When she and her husband moved to Red Wing in 1970, they bought an old house at 530 Webster St. which they renovated. She enjoyed her home immensely, feeding the birds and deer that so often visited her yard, and she loved living in Red Wing.

Among her great likes was painting, which she pursued throughout most of her adult life. Her artistic inclinations led her to appreciate literature, painting and travel. Her significant capacity for friendship led to one of her most fulfilling life long involvements with wonderful friends in all the places she lived. In addition she had an informed appreciation for antiques which was translated into The River Peddler Antique Shop in Red Wing where a group of friends created a successful antique business for many years. Her passion for history, especially American history, led her to read voraciously and visit many noteworthy historic sites. When she was not reading history or literature she was usually reading the Wall Street Journal.

She was a long time devoted member of P.E.O. Gifts in her honor/memory may be made to.....P.E.O.; c/o Sandra Carrington - President; N1498 - 830 Street; Hager City, WI 54014...., in support of the PCE (Program for Continuing Education), which benefits numerous women who are seeking educational support.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday (October 23) at 2 pm in the chapel at St. Brigid's at Hi Park. The Rev. Gary Elg will officiate. An informal reception will follow the service.
