Gladys V. Smith, age 101, of Byron, died Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Hospitals - St. Mary's Campus in Rochester.
Gladys was born Dec. 23, 1913 in St. Paul, Minnesota, was raised, and graduated from High School, in Rochester. She spent the remainder of her life in Kalmar Township, Olmsted County. Gladys married Arleigh Smith on Dec. 10, 1932. The couple farmed and raised five children. She was an avid horsewoman and belonged to the Pine Island Saddle Club. Other memberships include the Byron United Methodist Church, where she was active for many years, the Byronia Rebekah Lodge, where she was a member for over fifty years, the Byron Book Club, and the Red Hat Ladies were a recent favorite group. She enjoyed baking, canning, and made most of her own clothes.
Survivors include three daughters, Colleen Gray of Loveland, CO; Jo Marie (David) Strain of Byron; and Judith (Hilbert) Fritz of Baldwin, WI; her son, Lyle (Ruth) of Byron; her daughter-in-law, Sherron Fuchs of Rochester; seventeen grandchildren, twenty seven great grandchildren, fourteen great great grandchildren, five step great grandchildren, and three step great great grandchildren. Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Amelia Holt, her husband, Arleigh, who died March 26, 1994, her son Bob, two grandsons, and two great grandsons.
The memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2015, at the Byron United Methodist Church with Pastor Beth Perez officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Rochester. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 4, 2015, at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel, and an hour before the service Friday at the church.
