Gladys V. Smith, age 100 of Zumbrota, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016. The memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel with Pastor Jon Bitter officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Gladys Verona Friedrich was born on January 12, 1916 to Christian August and Anna Katharina Bertha (Holst) Friedrich in Goodhue County. She attended school in Zumbrota and on June 25, 1938 she married Philip Smith. She was baptized and confirmed as a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota. Her early years were spent farming with Phil and supporting the household. They began their family in Zumbrota and later moved to Rochester. Gladys worked at Libbys and later, lovingly cared for a number of children. She provided a wonderful opportunity for those children to be cared for in an environment of fun and individual attention. Among her many attributes, her cooking was outstanding. She was known for her homemade buns. She also enjoyed gardening, growing vegetables and flowers, playing cards with relatives and neighbors.
Gladys adored her three children, six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She loved playing games, and making crafts at the kitchen table. Phil and Gladys enjoyed many trips with close friends and relatives.
Gladys is survived by her son, Gary (Carol) Smith of Kasson; her daughter, Marie (Bruce) Ellingson of Union Kentucky; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three half-sisters and three half-brothers.
Gladys was preceded in death by the love of her life, Phil in 2006; daughter, Janet; great-grandson, Jacob; an infant sister; one brother; six half-brothers; her step-mother and her parents.
Gladys and Phil were founding members of the Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rochester. Memorials are preferred to this church or the American Heart Association.
