Gladys Emily Linder

November 8, 1920 — November 16, 2014

Gladys Emily Linder of Lake City died November 16, 2014. She was 94. Born November 8, 1920 in St. Paul, Minn., Gladys was the oldest of four children of Ernest Paul Weigt and Emily Lindberger. She graduated from John Marshall High School in Southeast Minneapolis and studied the comptometer machine, which was a mechanical calculator, at business college. She worked as bookkeeper in her father's floral business and also did comptometer work at various banks in St. Paul.
Gladys met her husband Roger Linder in the early 1940s at the Minneapolis Ice Arena, and they corresponded for two years while he served in the U.S. Naval Construction Force, known as the Seabees, in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. After his discharge, Roger and Gladys were married March 2, 1946, in St. Paul. The couple moved to Lake City in November 1946 when the company Roger worked for, O'Neil Irwin Mfg. Co., moved there. They had two children, Gerald and Sue Ann.
Gladys lived an active and social life that was anchored by her devotion to Lake City United Methodist Church. Over her nearly seven decades at the church, Gladys participated in Susannah Circle and choir, was a Sunday school teacher, served as chairman of church dinners, and served from 1974-86 as financial secretary. In addition, Gladys arranged parchments and alter flowers from 1946-2012, serving under 13 pastors in her 66 years.
Outside of church, Gladys was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and VFW since 1948. In earlier years, she enjoyed golf, bowling and skiing. "Glad" also loved music and played her accordion on radio shows. An avid traveler, she and Roger enjoyed trips to China, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Africa, Mexico and Europe.
In recent years, Gladys loved her condo on the banks of Lake Pepin, her friends and socializing in many card groups. With her ever-present sweet smile and laugh, and her positive outlook on life, she was always fun to be around and was surrounded by people who loved her. Gladys never stopped living life to the fullest, never looked back, never showed anger, and was the consummate hostess at family reunions, holiday celebrations and, especially, Water Ski Days.
Gladys is survived by her children, Gerald "Jerry" Linder of Mazeppa, Minn.; Sue McDougall (Duncan) of North Oaks, Minn.; beloved grandsons Colin McDougall of Minneapolis and Christopher (Jill) McDougall of St. Paul; sister-in-law Betty Weigt of Tulsa, Okla.; brother-in-law Louis Hough of Colorado; and 14 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Roger in October 2003, as well as her parents, brothers Ernest and Charles, and sister Louise.
