Gladys Eleanora Hempftling, 91, Red Wing, died Monday at her residence. She was born January 6, 1916, in Vasa, the daughter of Charles and Esther (Rundquist) Lindquist. She was baptized and confirmed at Vasa Lutheran Church. She attended Vasa Rural School, she graduated from Red Wing Central High School as valedictorian in 1934 and from Red Wing Teacher Training Department in 1935. She taught in rural school District 38, Belle Creek and Featherstone School District 19. She did substitute teaching at Vasa Consolidated School. She married Frederick L. Hempftling on June 24, 1943 at Vasa Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed in Vasa until retiring and moving to Red Wing in 1976. He died March 13, 1990. She was a lifetime member of Vasa Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for 35 years and was a member of several church organizations where she held various offices, including that of LCW president. She served as a leader of the Vasa Happy Hustlers 4-H Club for many years, she was active in Rural Youth and Vasa Friendly Farmerettes Homemakers Group. She was a member of the Vasa Museum Board, the Goodhue County Historical Society, the Goodhue County Rural Teachers Assn., Red Wing Area Seniors; she did volunteer work at Fairview Seminary Home and was member of the Auxiliary there; she served as election judge for the City of Red Wing and the Red Wing School District; she enjoyed knitting and crocheting hats for many friends and relatives. Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn (David) Falksen of Arlington, VA and Joyce Huff (David Lehman) of Apple Valley; one grandson, Geoffrey Falksen of Hamden, Connecticut; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, one brother and sister-in-law: Everett and Helen Lindquist. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Vasa Lutheran Church with Reverend Michael Dobbins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Geoffrey and David Falksen, David Lehman, Robert and Adam Lindquist and Randy Samos. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial are preferred to the church.
