Gilmore “Gilly” Charles Lee, 92, of Red Wing, died Sunday, August 13, 2023 at his home with his family by his side. He was born June 14, 1931 in Belle Creek Township to Gilbert and Charolette (Husbyn) Lee. He attended Welch schools and Red Wing Central High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in the Army until his honorable discharge in 1953. On September 5, 1959 he was united in marriage to Margaret Gruenwald.
Gilly worked for Sylvander Heating in Red Wing until 1961 when the family moved to Chippewa Falls where he worked for Hovlan Sheet Metal. The family returned to Red Wing in 1972 and Gilly worked for Sylvander again before moving to Smith Heating. In 1983 he became the maintenance man for Jostens until he retired in 1994.
He was a longtime member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church where he was the custodian for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years and he was a life-long baseball fan, especially the Minnesota Twins. He also enjoyed listening to county music on the RFD radio network. Gilly also loved to dance. He always enjoyed a good polka or waltz. Most of all, he enjoyed time with his family. He loved being a grandfather to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He always got on well with little ones.
He is survived by his children, Timothy (Nora) Lee of Shoreview, Dale (Tammy) Lee of Lake City, Shari (Daniel) Francisco of Arkansas, Barbara (Don Martens) Mamer of Red Wing, and William Qualle of Gaylord; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother Luverne Lee; his companion for the last 20 years, Edith Davis; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; brothers, Butch and Bob Lee; and his parents.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Welch with Rev. CJ Boettcher officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and one hour prior to the service at church.
