Gerry "Boot" Butenhoff

Gerald Allen "Boot" Butenhoff, age 58, of Red Wing died Thursday, March 26, 2015 at this home. He was born on October 11, 1956 in Olivia, MN to Marlen and Marilyn (Carlson) Butenhoff. His family moved to Red Wing in 1966. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Olivia, MN and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church in Red Wing. Gerry graduated from Red Wing Central High in 1974. He was an honor student and a wrestler. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and Rochester Community and Technical College. Gerry then started his career with the City of Red Wing as an operator for the Water Department. He retired on November 1, 2014 after serving for 37 years. He was in numerous bowling leagues over a 20 year period and has bowled a perfect 300 several times! Gerry was a voracious reader, and an avid bicycler. He was a true lone wolf, going about life his own way but was always there when needed. Gerry was a wonderful big brother, uncle, and great-uncle. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his parents, Marlen and Marilyn Butenhoff of St. Joseph, MN, formerly of Red Wing; four siblings, Barb Gernentz of Red Wing, Linda Butenhoff of St. Joseph, MN, Maria (Dennis) Steele of Apple Valley, and John (Meadow Willgrubs) Butenhoff of Red Wing; nine nieces and nephews, Jessica (Jason Groll) Paschke of Baudette, MN, Jennifer (Paul) Shaw of Red Wing, Jerod (Amanda Johnson) Gernentz of Hastings, James (Carrie Duke) Gernentz of Eagan, Grady (Elizabeth Sherin) Steele of Grand Forks, ND, Regen Steele of Apple Valley, Cole Butenhoff-Phillips of St. Joseph, MN, Johnny Butenhoff of Red Wing, and Nora Butenhoff of Red Wing; four great-nieces-and-nephews; Ella and Evan Paschke of Baudette, MN, and Brynna and Blake Shaw of Red Wing; and many others relatives and friends.
A celebration of Gerry's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Pastor Diane Sponheim officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A reception will follow at the Leo C. Peterson American Legion, Post #54. Memorials are preferred to the Angel Foundation (www.mnangel.org).
