Gerald R. Dooley

September 28, 1939 — February 18, 2019

Gerald Robert Dooley, 79, of Red Wing, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester after an accidental fall on the ice. He was born Sept. 28, 1939, in Oak Park, Illinois, to Robert and Margaret (Petrosky) Dooley and graduated from De La Salle High School in Chicago. He went on to attend St. Mary's University in Winona, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Mathematics. During college, he met his wife, Mary Graff and the two were married on July 13, 1963, in Britton, South Dakota. They lived several places when he began his career with IBM until settling in Rochester. He worked as a system engineer, marketing manager and on international assignments, retiring after 31 years in 1992. Living in Rochester, he had been active in the neighborhood watch programs, Kiwanis Club and had worked with Mayor Canfield during his time in office. He and Mary moved to Red Wing in 1998, where he was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, Senior Center, and the Red Wing Golf Club. He was an avid volunteer and community activist. He taught 55 Alive safe driving program, drove for Three Rivers/Hiawatha Land Transit and did valet parking for Mayo Clinic in Red Wing. Together, he and Mary delivered Meals on Wheels for the past 5 years. He loved the outdoors any time of the year. He spent hours working in his garden and landscaping. He enjoyed downhill skiing and hiking the North Shore. He and Mary also enjoyed vacationing in Hilton Head, South Carolina and locally spent many summers boating on the river. Trains were Jerry's passion-he loved learning about them, reading about them and traveling on them. He was able to channel his enthusiasm for trains by helping to start The Gandy Dancers Model Railroad Club in Red Wing. When Jerry wasn't busy with a new woodworking project or whipping up a batch of his secret spaghetti sauce, he loved going to his grandchildren's activities and spending meaningful time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Red Wing; three children, Kathy (Dan) O'Connor of Chanhassen, Sandra (Greg) Warfield of Savage, and Kip Dooley (formerly Lisa Dooley) of Minneapolis; six grandchildren Baihly, Annika and Cole Warfield and Quinn, Brendan and Molly O'Connor; and two sisters, Patricia and Sharon Dooley both of Wheaton, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents.
