Gerald Berning, 92, of Red Wing, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at his residence at Deer Crest. He was born March 27, 1917 in Adrian, Minnesota to Bernard and Carolyn (Glovka) Berning. He attended schools in Rice Lake, Wisconsin and later attended vocational schools in Rice Lake studying machinery. Gerald married Frances Sirinek on June 25, 1941 in Chetek, Wisconsin. Frances died on June 16, 2009. He was a World War II Veteran enlisting in the U.S. Army in December of 1942 and was honorably discharged in November of 1945. Gerald worked for Bill Wold Trucking of Chetek, WI, Chetek Industries, and Red Wing Industries. Gerald was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the American Legion, VFW, and was a former Boy Scouts Assistant Leader. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, bowling, horseback riding, raising horses, and enjoyed family gatherings.

He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn (Donald) Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah, Cheryl (Harold) Puppe of Woodville, Wisconsin, and Sandra Fischer of Bowling Green, Ohio; two sons, Jerome (Betty) Berning of Decorah, Iowa, and Dana (Lou) Berning of Taylor Falls, Minnesota; grandchildren, Steve Puppe, Renee Havelka, Kari White, Angie Petersmeyer, Tony Berning, Jamey Berning, and 12 great-grandchildren. Gerald is also survived by his brother Wilfred Berning of Hinsdale, Illinois and one sister-in-law Emma Berning of Chetek, Wisconsin. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Frances of almost 68 years, an infant daughter, one granddaughter, two sisters, one brother, and son-in-law Todd Fischer.

Mass of Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 12 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Red Wing American Legion Leo C. Peterson #54. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at church.
