George Joseph Hoeppner

July 12, 1932 — November 9, 2012

George Hoeppner, 80, died peacefully at home on November 9, 2012 after a two year battle with cancer.

George Joseph Hoeppner was born on July 12, 1932 to Joseph and Mary (Szybillo) Hoeppner in Amityville, NY. He was in the Navy from 1951 to 1954 and especially enjoyed the time he spent stationed in Naples, Italy.

George worked for IBM from 1954 until his retirement in 1987. He started in Bridgeport CT, worked in Endicott NY, Oklahoma City, OK and finally Chicago where he spent almost 20 years until his retirement.

In 1955 he married Nancy Brillinger, had a son Robert, but sadly after nearly 16 years, they divorced. In 1975, he married Seig Conklin (nee Venclovas) in Roselle, Illinois. A daughter, Susan, was born in 1978. The family moved to Rochester MN in 1992.

George had a life-long interest in Magic and enjoyed performing (though not professionally) as well as building and designing magic tricks and illusions for others to build. More than anything else, once he was through with them, he enjoyed giving away his magic items to other magicians.

He loved to travel and spent time in Europe (England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands), China and Singapore. He traveled to all the countries in South and Central America (except Columbia) and visited Canada a number of times. Most of all, he loved Mexico and took many trips to all 31 states. Sometimes, he went with his family and other times, he went by himself. Each trip was thoroughly enjoyed. George also took many trips within the US visiting national parks, major cities, resort areas. He has been to every state except Alaska. Even when he had cancer, during the last two years, he was able to take driving trips to visit wineries in Palisades CO, Finger Lakes NY and Council Bluffs IA. This was in addition to visits to family in Wisconsin and Chicago.

Above all else, George was a collector. He loved to collect, learn everything there is to know about his collections and then move on to something new. He has collected police insignia (patches and badges) and had insignia from all the countries in South and Central America as well as all the states in Mexico. This collection was what started his travels to these countries. He also had collections from all the states in the US, Canada, all the European countries and many of the Arab countries. When he was finished, he sold some of the collections and gave away many more.

He has collected Hopi Kachina dolls, Bobbleheads, thimbles, beer steins, music boxes, mechanical banks, Royal Doulton figurines, Indian Durbar festival figures to create a diorama, toy soldiers again for dioramas depicting battles, tsubas (samorai sword guards), Oaxacan folk art, wine labels, and 'Day of the Dead' items which he donated to schools in the area. George had a huge model train layout in the basement. He sold a few items but gave away many more.

George is survived by his wife Seig Hoeppner in Rochester, a daughter Susan (Brian) Baus in Wisconsin, a son Robert Hoeppner and granddaughter Elaina Hoeppner in Massachusetts, brothers Ken (Suzanne) Hoeppner and Phil (Cathy) Hoeppner in Vermont, Bob (MaryEllen) Hoeppner in Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his parents.
