George Russell Henderson, 83, of Red Wing, MN, formerly of Casselton, ND, passed away at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, MN on Monday, April 15, 2013 with family at his side.
George was born on August 21, 1929 in Lynchburg, North Dakota to Floyd Oscar and Theresa (Laber) Henderson. He was the youngest of four siblings. George graduated from Casselton High School in 1948 where he excelled in basketball, football, baseball and track. He met his wife of 53 years, Jeanne Adair Olson, in Casselton, ND and they were married on December 15, 1950 in Fargo, ND. George retired from Sherwin Williams in 1989 after thirty dedicated years. He received numerous sales awards from Sherwin Williams throughout his career. The couple and their family resided in Rochester, MN for eighteen years, then moved to Wauwatosa, WI, a western suburban of Milwaukee, where they lived for six years. They returned to Minnesota and lived in Eden Prairie and then retired to Red Wing, MN. George was an avid golfer and masterful bridge player throughout his life. In his retirement he enjoyed gardening, bird watching, woodworking and wintering in Florida. He was a loving husband to Jeanne and a nurturing, supportive father to his children and grandchildren. He was always quick witted and loved by everyone whose life he touched. He was also active in his church.
George is survived by his daughter, Judy (Robert) Peters of Glenwood, MN; his son, Mark Henderson of State College, PA; five grandchildren, Elisabeth (Dana) McKigney, Brian Peters, Elliott Planting, Hilary and Eric Henderson; one great grandson, Benjamin McKigney; and one brother Jim. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne; his twin daughters, Adele (Paul) Planting and Adair Henderson; his brother, Oscar; and one sister, Ramona.
A service in memoriam celebrating George's life will be on Saturday, April 27th, 2013 at 1 PM at First Lutheran Church in Red Wing, MN, with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
