George Eldon Archer

May 23, 1926 — August 12, 2017

George "Al" Archer, age 91, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 in Stewartville, MN.

George Eldon Archer was born May 23, 1926 in Wyoming, MN to George and Ruth (Aney) Archer. He moved to Byron as a child. George enlisted, with his father signing for him, in the US Navy at age 17. He served during WW II in the Pacific Theater on the USS Kasaan Bay and the USS Lexington. On Apr. 18, 1947 he married Joyce Keller in Rochester where the couple made their home. George worked as a certified welder, and then at B & B Auto Body before becoming a Fire Fighter for the Rochester Fire Department, retiring as a Driver. George worked as a custodian at RCTC before retiring again. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1215 of Rochester. George and Joyce spent their winters in Arizona. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, fishing, and playing cards.

Survivors include his children, three sons Gary of Rochester; Randy (Janis) of Minnetonka, MN; Alan (Beth) of Stewartville; and his daughter Virginia (Brent) Coggins of Rochester; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; his sister Jeanne Fenske of Rochester; and his brother Bill Archer of Rochester. George was preceded in death by his wife Joyce who died Feb. 26, 2009, his parents, three sisters Helen, Madonna, and Marlys, and his daughter-in-law Deloris.
