Gary Carsten, age 61, of Spring Valley, Wisconsin, formerly of Lake City, passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at the Baldwin Hospital in Baldwin, Wisconsin. He was born April 21, 1954, in Lake City, Minnesota, to Ervin and Florabelle (Brehmer) Carsten. Gary graduated in 1972 from Lincoln High School in Lake City.
Gary worked in Lake City at Di-Acro and also in Red Wing at Riviera Kitchens. He then moved to the Twin Cities where he worked at Butwin Sportswear for ten years, where he met his future wife, Marlys. In 1989, Gary and Marlys moved to Wisconsin and he worked as a custodian at River Falls College. He also worked as a bartender. He married Marlys Kopka September 17, 2001 in River Falls. He was an avid Harley rider and enjoyed restoring his 1930 Model A Tudor street rod. Gary was also a member of the Indian Head Motor Cycle Club. In his later years he enjoyed spending time with his loved ones, especially his granddaughters.
Gary is survived by his wife Marlys of Spring Valley, WI; one daughter, Shannon Carsten of Durand, WI; step-daughter, Josette Perkovich of Arkansaw, WI; one sister, Penny (Robert) Linder, of Lake City; granddaughters, Alexis and Ashley Nimmo; sister-in-law, Barb Carsten of Scottsdale, AZ and many nieces and nephews, Shane, Eric, Jakob, Jesse, Denae, Heather, Nathan, Garrett, Jessica, Jordon, Jacob, Anthony, Macenzie and Paige. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Wayne and Kim Carsten; two sisters, Sandra Carsten and an infant sister, Jane; and a niece Kaili Linder.
A Celebration of Gary's life will be on Friday, April 1, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lake City with the Rev. Scott Fiege officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, March 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the services at the church.
