A funeral mass for Gary Bergren will be held Friday August 12th at 11:00 AM at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Pine Island with the Reverend Randal Kasel officiating. Military rites provided by the Pine Island American Legion will follow. Burial will occur at a later date. Mr. Bergren, 54, of Pine Island, died Sunday August 7, 2011 at his home in Pine Island following a lengthy illness.
Gary Michael Bergren was born August 14, 1956 in Minneapolis, the son of Gerald and Lorraine Bergren. Raised in St. Martin, Minnesota, he was a graduate of Albany High School in 1974. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served two years. He attended Anoka Ramsey Community College, graduating in 1979. On September 20, 1980, in St. Martin, Minnesota, he married Nancy Kaschmitter. The couple resided in the Twin Cities for a year and then moved to Pine Island, where they purchased the town's bowling alley in 1981. The couple operated Pine Island Lanes for fifteen years. Mr. Bergren was diagnosed with brain cancer in 1990. In the mid-1990s, the Bergrens sold the bowling alley, and Mr. Bergren became an operator at Dairy Farmers of America, where he continued working until his illness dictated that he retire in 2002.
Mr. Bergren was a member of Saint Michael's Catholic Church, and the American Legion in Pine Island.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Bergren of Pine Island; two daughters, Laura (John) Bazal of Deerfield, Illinois, and Ashley Bergren of Minneapolis; his father, Gerald Bergren of Albany; and three sisters, Diana Bergren of Burnsville, Sandra (Mark) Dirkes of Avon, and Judy (Ken) Turner of Mount Juliet, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Bergren; and a sister-in-law, Joan Kaschmitter.
Friends may call Thursday August 11th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Mahler Chapel, in Pine Island, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 PM. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
