Garrison Duane Tienter

ROCHESTER - Garrison Duane Tienter, age 81, of Rochester, passed away Tuesday, March 28, 2016 at Mayo Clinic Hospital - St. Mary's Campus in Rochester. Garrison was born on January 19, 1935 at his grandparent's farm in Forestville Township, in Fillmore County, Minnesota. He was raised by his grandparents Ben and Gertrude Tienter. He attended Stone School for the first few grades and then attended Rochester schools when he and his grandparents moved to Rochester. Garrison graduated from Rochester High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1957 to February 1959. After discharge from the Army, he worked at Gopher Aviation from 1959 to 1970, Chatfield Lumber Yard from 1970 to 1980, and as an independent sales representative for hardware manufacturers. Garrison and Dorothy Smalley were married at the Methodist Church in Stewartville, MN on a snowy day, September 29, 1956.
Garrison volunteered at Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army Food Shelf, Rochester Public Schools, and Evangel United Methodist Church for Children's Summer Bible School, youth mission trips, and Friday morning prayer breakfasts at Grandma's Kitchen. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, son Brian (Pam) of Mound, MN; daughter Beth Tienter of Rochester; grandsons Chris Tienter of Mound; Corey Hinsch of Hayfield, MN; and Cameron Hinsch of Rochester. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ben Tienter, and his mother Bernice Westphal.
The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Evangel United Methodist Church in Rochester with the Rev. Phil Strom officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in the Chatfield Cemetery with Military Honors by the Chatfield - Giese-Kelsey VFW Post #6913.
