Frederick B. "Fred" Huneke age 87 of Bellechester died on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester. A funeral mass is scheduled for Monday, October 18, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester with Father Bruce Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, October 17, 2010 from 2:00 - 6:00 PM, with a Rosary at 2:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Monday one hour prior to the mass at the church.
Frederick Bernard Huneke was born on August 26, 1923 in Bellechester, MN to Anton and Mathilda (nee Krick) Huneke. He grew up in rural Bellechester, and graduated from Goodhue High School in 1941. Fred started working as a farm hand for Art Gregoire and several other area farmers. On November 18, 1944 he entered the U.S. Navy. During WW II he served on the USS Donner in the Atlantic Theatre, where he suffered an accidental head injury. He was honorably discharged on April 29, 1946 and he returned to the Bellechester area. On October 15, 1946 he married Katherine DeFrang at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in West Albany. They farmed near Bellechester until selling the farm to their son in 1988. Fred did his last farm work in the fall of 2008. Fred was a founding member of the Bear Valley Watershed, where he served on the board for twenty eight years. He was one of the first farmers to practice soil conservation by contour farming methods and the East Goodhue Conservation District presented him with an award for being the top conservation farmer. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bellechester, where he was a past board member of the church council, council president and trustee, the Bellechester American Legion Post #598, where he served as commander, the Knights of Columbus Council #2751, where he served as past Grand Knight and treasurer for many years and was a member of the disabled Veterans of America. Fred spearheaded several food and clothing drives to help in Tanzania and the Appalachian area and he enjoyed collecting and taking clothing to the M.O.R.E. Center in St. Paul.
Fred is survived by his wife Katherine, currently residing at the Zumbrota Nursing Home, his children, Tom (Sue) Huneke of Cannon Falls; Mary (Mike) Tri of Rochester; Janet (Rick) Ryan of Zumbrota; John (Ellen) Huneke of Bellechester; Eileen (Ed) Krueger of Elkton, SD; Ann (Dave) Buck of Goodhue; Paul (Deb) Huneke of Bellechester; David (Kathy) Huneke of Zumbrota; Andy (Kim) Huneke of Zumbrota and Joe (Julie) Huneke of Goodhue; forty seven grandchildren; forty five great-grandchildren; brother, Cyril (Rita) Huneke of Bellechester and sisters-in-law, Therese Huneke of Zumbrota and Lois Mae Huneke of Wabasha. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Norbert, Lawrence and Jim Huneke; son, Joseph Gerard Huneke; granddaughter, Mary Huneke and great-granddaughter, Autumn Ann Buck. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Pro-Life MN or Seasons Hospice.
