Frank Alva Irwin, 89, of Mazeppa, died peacefully at Mayo Clinic St. Mary's Campus surrounded by family, on Saturday, February 22, 2025. He was born on March 14, 1935, in Zumbro Falls, MN to Ray Irwin and Louise (Young) Landsrud. He attended Lake City High School, graduating in 1953.
Frank was in the United States Army for 21 years and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 2. After retirement he worked for Valley Motor Implement in Mazeppa and Herman Implement in Wanamingo. He was Commander of the Mazeppa American Legion, volunteered for the Mazeppa Honor Guard, and was a member of the Zumbro Falls VFW. He served as Mayor of Mazeppa for 10 years, many years on the City Council of Mazeppa, and also as a Wabasha County Commissioner. Frank also served as a Volunteer at the Mazeppa Fire Department for 30 plus years and drove school and charter buses. Frank was an active member for over 50 years and served as District Governor of the Lion's Club, District 5M1, where he received the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award during his tenure. He was also on the Board of Directors for Camp Winnebago. He served in many roles at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mazeppa.
Frank is survived by his wife, Lenora of 70 years; daughters, Mary (Robert) Knish and Susan Christiansen; grandchildren, Kimberly (Cory) Dozark, Teresa (Jason) Nelson, Jeremy Tri, Amy (Chris) Josselyn, Brian Tri, and Dennis (Cassandra) Tri; Step grandchildren, Valerie Knish, Brandon Knish, and Breanna Knish; 7 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Angie Irwin; and Fluffy the dog.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Louise; brothers, Jack, Gene, Glenn, and Butch; sisters, Mary Anne, Myra, and Nancy; and grandson, Mikal Tri.
Frank cared deeply for his family and community.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Mazeppa with Father John Sauer officiating. Burial will follow at the Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Larson Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
