Frances Schaffer, 91, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, October 14, 2009, at her home. She was born November 26, 1917 in Red Wing, Minnesota to Alfred and Belle (Lund) Blaud. On December 9, 1917 she was baptized in Christ at First Lutheran Church. She graduated from Red Wing High School. Frances was united in marriage to Raymond Schaffer on February 7, 1948. During World War II she worked at a shoe factory and continued working part-time at Walt's Shoes until she was 91. She enjoyed bowling through her 70s. Frances also knitted baby hats for the hospital auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, puzzles, knitting, sewing, and cooking for family get-togethers. She was also an avid Red Wing sports fan. Frances was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Julie (Ron) Watermolen of Orlando, FL; son, John (Joan) of Red Wing; six grandchildren, Eric, Brian, and Matthew of Orlando, FL and Chris, Chad, and Andrea of Red Wing, six great-grandchildren, and many dear friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, one great-granddaughter, one sister, Betty, and her parents.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Carroll Maroll officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Thursday, October 22 at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society, and Fairview Red Wing Hospice.
