Evelyn M. Stensland age 87 of Pine Island, formerly of Wanamingo died on Friday afternoon, June 18, 2010 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. The funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Emmanuel Lutheran Church - Aspelund with Reverend Martin Horn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Evelyn Marcella Stensland was born on September 20, 1922 in Cherry Grove Township, Goodhue County, MN to John and Anna (nee Romo) Stensland. She grew up in rural Wanamingo and attended country school. In 1940 she graduated from Wanamingo High School. She attended Normal Training School in Red Wing and taught in rural Goodhue County. In 1952 she graduated from Luther Bible Institute and in 1954 she moved to Costa Rica to study Spanish and work as a missionary. After working as a missionary in Bolivia for twenty years she returned to the Wanamingo area. She taught at the Independent Seminary in Cannon Falls before moving onto the family farm in rural Wanamingo with her parents and sisters. Evelyn enjoyed reading, music and flowers. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church - Aspelund and enjoyed being in the quilting club. Evelyn is survived by her sister, Amy Stensland of the Wanamingo area, special cousin, Edwin Stensland of Wanamingo and other cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Orva Stensland. Casketbearers are John, Jerry, Gene and Dale Stensland and Mark Romo. The family suggests memorials to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church building fund.
