Evelyn Jorgensen Satrum, age 92, formerly of Zumbrota died Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island.
Evelyn Ruth Atkinson was born in Mason City, IA on January 16, 1917 to William E. Atkinson and Grace Pearl Angell Atkinson. She attended Mason City High School and graduated in 1934. She played in the band, which went to four national band contests and had the privilege to play under John Philips Sousa when he directed the mass band in Flint, MI. On February 14, 1937 she married Charlie V. Jorgensen in Waseca. They moved to Fergus Falls in 1940 and later to Zumbrota, where they built, owned, and operated the Zumbrota By-Products Co. In 1949 they sold the company, and in 1951 moved to Goodhue where they bought a farm. Charlie died on October 12, 1960, and Evelyn moved back to Zumbrota. She married Henry Satrum on July 22, 1961; he died on October 12, 1988. She worked at Banitts Store and later for the Goodhue Co. Coop Electric Association. Evelyn was one of the first two women to serve on the Lands Lutheran Church Council, where she served as treasurer. Evelyn loved to travel, play bridge, golf, and most of all her family.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters, Marlis (William) Bystrom of Huntingon Beach, CA, Charlyn (Ronald) Webster of New Ulm, MN, and Dorothy Jorgensen of Albert Lea, MN; one son, Dwain (Marcia) Jorgensen of Rochester, MN; two step sons, Craig Satrum of Huntley, IL and Jon (Carolyn) Satrum of Downers Grove, IL; ten grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; sister, Lucille Lysne of Wilmar, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two brothers, Merle and Shirley Atkinson, and daughter, Janice.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 24, 2009 at United Redeemer Church with Reverend Susan Vikstrom officiating. Burial will be at the Zumbrota Cemetery. Visitation will be 4p.m. to 7p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and one hour prior to the service at the church.
