Evan Hallstrom

Evan Harold Hallstrom, 89, of Red Wing, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Fairview Red Wing Medical Center. He was born December 31, 1921 in Red Wing, to Frank and Esther (Eklund) Hallstrom. He graduated in 1939 from Red Wing Central High School and served in the US Army during WW II, from 1942-1945. After being honorably discharged he returned to Red Wing. On April 23, 1949, he married Carol Edquist at First Lutheran Church. He continued to work for his father and started the 3rd generation of Hallstrom Florist and Greenhouses, which he continued to work up until he became a resident of St. Brigid's at Hi-Park in 2009. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54, Burnson-Lillyblad VFW #1218, Red Wing Masonic Lodge and Golden K's. He was proud of his son and daughter-in-law, David and Diane, for continuing the family business and being 4th generation owners. Evan enjoyed his family, visiting with people, traveling with his family to Florida to watch and experience the NASA program and he especially loved eating lutefisk.

He is survived by his wife, Carol: one son, Dave (Diane) Hallstrom of Red Wing; one daughter, Sue (Joe) Byers of Fresno, Calif.; 3 grandchildren, Rob Trish and DeeDee Byers; 2 great-grandchildren, Aurora & Blake Byers; sister, Lynette (Sid) Lindstrom of Red Wing and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Orville and an infant sister, Marjorie.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at First Lutheran Church with Reverend Brian Scott officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion Post #54 Rifle Squad. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Legion prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday, April 8, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
