Eugene Henry Vogel

July 24, 2010 — July 29, 2011

Eugene "Bud" Henry Vogel, 91, resident of Homer Valley, Minnesota, completed life on July 29, 2011 at his home in Red Wing. He was born July 24, 1920 in Arcadia, Wisconsin to Henry and Polly (Stahowski) Vogel. Bud joined the National Guard on April 10, 1934 at the age of 14 and served in Europe during WWII. Bud was a graduate of the first Officer Training School in England. He served the country well, with having over six years of active duty, both in WWII and during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and over 35 years in the National Guard, rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Bud was married to Katharine "Kay" Boyle on June 15, 1946, at St. Matthews Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their marriage of more than 65 years was an example admired by their children. Places of residence were Arcadia, Wisconsin; Red Wing, Minnesota; Winona, Minnesota; and also their wintering home in Luquillo, Puerto Rico for the past 30 years. Bud sold Chevrolet and Oldsmobile cars at Vogel Garage, owned by his father, Henry Vogel, until entering manufacturing in the 1950's. He was instrumental in the startup of Arcadia Projects which in turned funded the first factory in Arcadia, which is now Ashley Furniture, and the Arcadia Medical Clinic.

Bud served his community well, being involved in the school board, Arcadia Projects, the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and many activities helping his fellow citizens. He was also the president of his class, played football, basketball, track and baseball. He served as captain of his teams and proved to be a natural leader. He was always an active participant in his local church, being a reader during mass or serving as an usher. He loved fishing, hunting, GM cars, Louis L'Amour books and he loved to share many happy days with his family friends while enjoying the outdoors.

Bud was deeply loved by his wife, Kay; his 3 sons, Dick (Kathy) of Mason, Michigan, Chuck (Nita) of Palm Coast, Florida and Marc (Ann) of Red Wing; 6 daughters, Barb (Butch) Scott of Red Wing, Jean (Dave) Christopherson of Red Wing, Katharine (Ricky) Johnson of Lund, Wisconsin, Anne (Scott) Parsons of Red Wing, Lee (Ole) Olson of Ellsworth and Jan Vogel of Winona; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and siblings, Henry (Joan) Vogel, Mary Glubka, Joan Kampa, Kathleen Geralts and Colleen (Claude) Deck.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Robert, Eileen, Dorothy, Marie and Colette; great-granddaughter, Royce; and son-in-law, Douglas Hanson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish in Winona, with Father Thomas Hargesheimer presiding. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and honorary pallbearers his great-grandchildren. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Red Cross or to your local blood mobile can be made in Bud's memory. Arrangements handled by Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, Red Wing, MN. www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
