Eugene "Gene" Arthur Glander was born in Lake City on April 6, 1941 to Edward and Anna (Reese) Glander. He passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN on May 8, 2016.
Gene attended St. John's Lutheran School and Lincoln High School in Lake City.
In 1963 he married Judith Reincke. They had two children, Mike and Lisa. They later divorced. In 1983 he married Cheryl Tomforde.
Gene began working at a young age at the Jewel Nurseries in Lake City. He was also a paper carrier. After high school he entered the US Navy and served on an aircraft carrier in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He was a machinist and leadman at Gould (Federal Mogul) for 15 years. He began his 30-year career in excavating with his brother-in-law, Milt Mickelson. Later he started Glander Excavating. He built the second nine holes at the Lake City Golf Course before retiring in 2000 when he sold the business to his son, Mike. He worked on building the Jewel Golf Course in Lake City. In 2001 he started a new business, Glander Sand and Gravel.
Gene was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. He belonged to the Jaycees, volunteer fire department, Lake City's planning commission and streets and parks commission. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, belonged to the Wells Creek Riders Snowmobile Club, St. John's Cemetery Association, and was an 8-year member and president of the Eagle Crest Cove Association in Amery, Wisconsin.
Gene will be remembered as a kind, generous man who deeply loved his family, and enjoyed being with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, son Michael (Tammy), daughter Lisa, granddaughter Shelby, great-granddaughter, Kashlyn, and brother, Marvin. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alvin, Raymond, Orlan, Clarence, and Ralph, sisters Phyllis Hoffman, Dorothy Mickelson, and Lorraine Springer.
A Funeral Service will be held, Friday, May 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City with Rev John Berg officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.
