Ervin W. Matzke, age 81, of Rochester, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2014), at his home surrounded by his family.
Ervin William Matzke was born February 9, 1933 in Lamberton, MN, the son of Anton and Auguste (Stern) Matzke. He attended school in the Lamberton area. He served in the United States Navy from 1951 until 1955 and was stationed on the East Coast. Following his honorable discharge Ervin ran a 24 hour restaurant for 8 years. On October 20, 1962 Ervin and Micheleen "Mike" DeSchepper were united in marriage in Tracy, MN. Following their marriage, Ervin worked for American Airlines and several manufacturing businesses. He worked as a milk tester for DHIA for 7 years. Ervin was employed for Mid American Dairy in Zumbrota and retired after 20 years of service. Following his retirement he continued to work for McNeilus Companies in Dodge Center and Schmidt Printing in Byron. He then decided to "retire again". Ervin loved to travel and his destinations included Alaska, all of the states west of the Mississippi, Eastern Canada, and all of the states along the Great Lakes. Ervin was a member of the Pine Island American Legion Post #184. He liked working with his hands, and was an avid inventor.
Ervin is survived by his wife, Mike of Rochester; his sons, Anthony (Deb) Matzke, and Daniel Matzke, both of Rochester; his daughter, Sandra Matzke of Rochester; one grandson, Brandon Matzke of Rochester; his sisters, Esther Kruse of Pipestone, MN; Arlene Kruse of Hutchinson, MN; Helen Goll of Alexandria; MN; Edna (Howard) Goll of Hancock, MN; and Emma Wall of Balaton, MN; his brothers, William Matzke of Alexandria, MN; and Alvin Matzke of Springfield, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert and Elmer Matzke, his brothers-in-law Herb Kruse, Harold Wall, John Goll, and Luvern Kruse and one niece, Sharon. He was also preceded in death by his infant daughter Candace Matzke in December of 1971.
A memorial service will be held at the Mahn Family Funeral Home- Rochester Chapel on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 21, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home-Rochester Chapel and again on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Spring burial will take place in the Pine Island Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.
