Ernest F. Banitt age 75 of Pine Island died Thursday, January 31, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, February 4, 2008 at 1:00 PM at Grace Lutheran Church in Oronoco with Reverend Paul Baldauf officiating. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery with military honors provided by Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, February 3, 2008 from 2:00 � 4:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home � Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ernest Frederick Banitt was born on February 11, 1932 in Florence Township, Goodhue County, MN to Fred and Clara (nee Heitman) Banitt. He grew up in rural Lake City and graduated from Lincoln High School in Lake City in 1952. On June 6, 1952 he entered the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged on June 5, 1956. He returned to Lake City and started working at Gillette Eaton in Lake City. On April 4, 1959 he married Margaret A. Perkins at St. John's Lutheran Church in Lake City. They made their home in Red Wing for several years, moved to Rochester and in 1966 they moved to rural Pine Island. In 1960 Ernest started working as a machinist for IBM in Rochester and he retired in 1990 after thirty years. Ernest also farmed near Pine Island while working at IBM. Ernest was a member of Charles Cowden American Legion Post #184, had served on the board for Grace Lutheran Church, served as secretary for New Haven Township for several years and was a former member of the Rochester Police Reserve. Ernest loved fishing, traveling, golfing, riding motorcycle, woodworking, but especially farming and his family. Ernest is survived by his wife, Margaret, one son, Bryan Banitt of Gays Mills, WI, three daughters, Barbara (Dean) Bromstad of Mound, Beth Ann Banks of Pine Island and Brenda Hvitved of Pine Island, six grandchildren, Brandi Kranz, Brooke, Danyelle and Justin Banks, Kody and Adam Hvitved, one great grandson, Aiden Pernu, one brother, Walter (Dorraine) Banitt of Goodhue and one sister, Mary Ann Beck of Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Marvin and Robert Banitt.
