Erma D. Schaefer, age 97 of Pine Island died on Thursday October 14, 2010 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 AM Tuesday October 19, 2010 at The United Methodist Church in Pine Island with the Reverend Carolyn Westlake officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Monday October 18, 2010 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel in Pine Island and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Pine Island Cemetery.
Erma Delores Messner was born December 5, 1912 in Eyota Township to Anton and Isabelle (Sines) Messner. She attended school in Eyota. Erma married Harold W. Schaefer on October 30, 1929. She raised eight children in the Pine Island area. Erma worked for Libby's Canning factory in Rochester and also did housekeeping for the United Methodist Church in Pine Island. Harold preceded Erma in death on April 14, 1979.
Erma enjoyed crocheting and she made an afghan for each of her children and grandchildren. In her younger years Erma gardened and canned the food that she grew. Another talent of Erma's was her cooking. She joined her family in making a cookbook out of her many recipes. Above all Erma enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Erma was also involved in several groups. The Senior Citizen's group she was involved in met and did many arts and crafts and also travelled. She was also part of the birthday club and the United Methodist Church Ladies' Aid.
Erma is survived by seven children, Geraldine (Robert) Wallaker of Wanamingo, Norman (Marie) Schaefer of Wanamingo, Lowell (LaVonne) Schaefer of Pine Island, Dale (Janet) Schaefer of Detroit Lakes, Bonita (Harlan) Hokanson of Goodhue, Barbara (Eugene) Gullickson of Rochester, and Galen Schaefer of Zumbrota; her son-in-law, Robert Braaten; four step children, Thresa (Donald) Wiley, Darlene Richter, Lowell Schaefer, and Robert Schaefer, all of IA; thirty-nine grandchildren; one hundred and seven great-grandchildren; numerous great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren; and special neighbors, Jerry and Verona Kruse. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold; her daughter, Shirley Braaten; granddaughter, Sharon Hokanson-Strack; grandsons-in-law, Don Raths and Tim Strack; great-grandson, Nathen Hokanson; great-great grandson, Austin Larson; brothers, Lawrence and Bernard Messner; her sisters, Myrtle Briseth and Marion McIntosh; step son-in-law, Eldon Richter; and two step daughters-in-law Maxine Schaefer and Betty Schaefer.
