Emil William Zastrow

Emil William Zastrow, 86, of Rochester, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at Willows and Waters Senior Living Center with his wife Norma by his side and surrounded by those who loved him.
Emil was born on June 16, 1926, in Arcadia, Wisconsin to Emil and Theresa (Kostner) Zastrow. He graduated from Arcadia High School and enlisted in the Navy during World War II. On February 14, 1947, he married Norma Rosann Fetting, also from Arcadia. They enjoyed 66 years together as a great team. The majority of Emil's working years were with the U.S. Post Office in Rochester. Upon his retirement, he and Norma enjoyed their lake cabin near Faribault.
He was a quiet, kind, patient man with a caring nature. He enjoyed his vegetable garden, his lake home, and watching the birds at the feeders. His family and friends enjoyed his humor. When you saw the twinkle in his eye and his sly smile, you got ready to laugh. He loved helping his daughters until the challenges of Alzheimers prevented it. He would bring his work gloves, eager to be a part of any project that needed an extra pair of hands.
Emil is survived by his wife, Norma, three daughters: twins Sherry (Jim) Pehrs of Eyota , MN , and Mary (Ken) Byers of Waynesville, MO, Nadine (Dean) Yonkovich of Lincoln, MT, nieces, and nephews. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and will be greeted in Heaven by his parents, siblings, and friends. His siblings were always ready for a card game or cribbage match. We hear the cards shuffling now.
The family would like to thank Willows and Waters Senior Living Center and Seasons Hospice for the outstanding care and the love they gave to Emil. The staff became part of his extended family. We also extend our thanks for the in-home visits of former co-workers and of St Pius X Catholic Church members where Emil was a long-time member.
The memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the Wm. T. McCoy Post #92 of the American Legion. Friends may call one hour before the service on Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to Seasons Hospice, Salvation Army's Caring Partners Program, or the Alzheimer's Assoc.
