Elwood Charles Karwand

Elwood C. Karwand, 77, died Wednesday, Feb. 20 at the Fairview Seminary Home in Red Wing, MN.

Karwand was born in Thief River Falls, MN, in 1931. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he joined the US Air Force, serving as an intelligence officer during and after the Korean War. He returned to Minnesota and enrolled at Hamline University, graduating in 1957 with a degree in English education. He earned his MA in journalism from the University of Minnesota in 1964.

In 1957, he married Barbara Sprenger of Zumbro Falls. Karwand taught and coached at high schools in Hibbing, MN, and Beloit, WI. In 1964, he joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as chairman of the journalism department. The department flourished under his direction, earning national accreditation and the student newspaper earned 28 consecutive All American ratings. In 1981 he resigned to enter public relations. He joined the faculty of Slippery Rock University in 1983, teaching there until his retirement in 1997. After his retirement, the Karwands moved to Red Wing, MN.

Karwand was a nationally recognized authority on scholastic journalism, serving as the executive secretary of the Journalism Education Association for 12 years. He was recognized as Journalism Teacher of the Year in both Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Karwand received many awards for his service including the Achievement Medal of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. He was a charter member of the Association for Education in Journalism.

In Red Wing, Karwand served as the president of the Sons of Norway Lodge 58. He served on the library board; taught classes at the Senior Center; and edited and wrote for "The Historical News." He was a member of the Golden Kiwanis, American Legion Post 54 and The Roundtable Book Club. Karwand was an avid Gopher, Viking and Twins fan.

Karwand is survived by his wife; three children: Eldon (Lynne) Karwand, Center City, MN; Kim (Brian) Burke-Phillipp, Brooklyn Center, MN; and Colleen (Rob) Elliott, Sturgeon Bay, WI; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister and a daughter, Kaye.

Memorial service with military honors will be Monday, February 25 at 1:30 PM at tFirst United Methodist Church in Red Wing with Reverend Wayne Walther officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of services Monday at the church. A private burial will take place in the Zumbro Falls Cemetery. Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel is handling arrangements.
