ROCHESTER The memorial service celebrating the life of Elizabeth (Betty) I. Harland will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13 at the Congregational Church United Church of Christ with Rev. Ronald Meyer officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Harland, 85, of Rochester, died Sunday (Mar. 8, 2009) in Rochester.

Elizabeth Irene Ringius was born March 9, 1923 to Edward and Irene (Peterson) Ringius in St. Paul, MN. She graduated from Central High School in 1941, and the University of Minnesota in 1945 with a degree in music. While there, she served as president of Sigma Kappa Sorority. On July 11, 1953 she married Herbert Harland in St. Paul; he died Dec. 13, 1971. The couple lived in Stillwater before moving to Wanamingo, MN in 1965, where she was the first woman elected to the School Board. She worked as a bookkeeper for Wedge Lumber Co. and was organist for the First Congregational Church, both of Zumbrota, from 1974 � 1983. After her retirement in 1983 she moved to Rochester. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 68 years, served as Guardian Director of Music for Job's Daughters, and was active in the Rochester Senior Center Crochet Group, and the Plymouth Circle Women's Fellowship Group. She enjoyed reading, playing the organ, and her family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Harland of Rochester, a granddaughter Melissa (David) LeBlanc of Athens, GA, and special pal, Lady. A son, John, preceded her in death.

Memorials are suggested to Paws and Claws Humane Society or the Rochester Senior Center.
