Effie Alice Books, 88, of Red Wing, died Sunday, October 12, 2013, at St. Brigid's at Hi-Park. She was born on October 24, 1924, in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin to Henry "Pete" and Zylphia (Baker) Arnold. She graduated from Maiden Rock High School and then worked as a secretary for the Red Wing Shoe Company. On November 20, 1947 she married George Books. They lived in Red Wing for a few years until they purchased a farm in rural Bay City. They farmed from 1951- 1977 and then moved back to Red Wing. For 10 years she worked at Jostens. George died March 21, 1984. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and volunteered as a pink lady at St. John's Hospital. She enjoyed bowling and following retirement enjoyed to travel. Her family recalls her love for baking, the holidays and having the family all together and being with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Marilyn Books of Red Wing, Vicki (Bill) Bowen of Prescott, Cheryl (Mike) Kostecki of Lakeville and Earl Books of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Amy, Jeremy, Emily, Brittainy, Russell, Jessica and Chloe; one great grandchild, Elijah; one sister, Hazel Erlandson of Hastings and one brother, Millard Arnold of Philadelphia, Penn. along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband and one brother, Bill.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Strunk officiating. Burial will be in the Maiden Rock Cemetery, Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
