Edwin "Doug" Douglas Pfirman, 89, of Red Wing died Friday, January 21, 2011. Born on April 17, 1921 to Edwin and Edna (Cable) Pfirman, Doug graduated from Mineola High School in Mineola, NY and then from Hofstra University. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served during World War II from 1943 to 1945. After his discharge he attended Wharton College. Doug married Adelaide Hahn on September 2, 1950. Doug was employed as a comptroller first for American Machine & Foundry and then for Crane Company. Over the course of his career, the couple lived in Long Island, NY, Dayton, OH, Naperville, IL, Westport, CT, Canfield, OH, and Washington, IA. In December 1988, the couple retired to Red Wing. Doug was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, and enjoyed gardening, photography, fishing and reading, especially about the Civil War and WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Adelaide; three children, Nancy (Joe) Nockels of Norfolk, NE, Ginger (Chris) Sack of Minneapolis, MN, Carl (John Keho) Pfirman of Los Angeles, CA; five grandchildren, Jonathan (Misty) Nockels, Matthew Nockels, Laura (Curt) Vonderohe, Dani Sack, and Shelly Sack; four great-grandchildren, Sky, Alexander, Noelle, and Asher Nockels. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Alva Mekeel.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Friday, January 28, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church with Father Michael Schulenberg officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Book of Golden Memories at Christ Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements are by the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel.
