Edwin Ernst Hibbing

The funeral for Edwin E. Hibbing of Rochester will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 7, 2011 at Hosanna Lutheran Church in Rochester. The Rev. Bill Meiers will officiate. Further services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina, Iowa with the Rev. Daniel Wagner officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the American Legion, will follow at the Prairie View Cemetery in Paullina.

Mr. Hibbing was 93 years of age when he died in his sleep at Seasons Hospice in Rochester on Monday January 3, 2011.

Edwin Ernst Hibbing was born on a farm northeast of Ocheyedan, Iowa, with a cleft palate and, after numerous surgeries, still left him with a speech problem. He served in the 478th Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He was highly decorated for his services. Among his decorations was the Legion of Merit. Edwin attended Iowa State University and received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was employed by Johns-Manville Corporation until his retirement. Between work, the service and vacations, he has been in all 50 states and 17 foreign countries.

Edwin married Darlys Diekman of Denver, Iowa on November 22, 1951, and she precedes him in death. They had three children - Alan, Ronda, and Susan. Several years after Darlys's passing, Edwin married Vivian Carey on December 1, 1990, who continues to reside in Rochester.

He is survived by his children, Alan (Anna) Hibbing of San Ramon, California, Ronda Reynolds of Denver, Colorado, and Susan Deveraux of North Platte, Nebraska; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Avenell Arnsberger of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Also surviving are a step-daughter, Lois Grush of Parker, Colorado; a step-son, Dr. John B. Carey of College Station, Texas; 5 step-grandchildren, and 2 step-great grandsons; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Hibbing of Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Darlys Hibbing; a brother, Harold Hibbing; a step-daughter-in-law, the Rev. Phyllis Carey; a step-son-in-law, Duane Grush; and a step-granddaughter, Lisa Marie Carey.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church in Rochester on Friday, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home in Paullina on Saturday.
