Edward Melvin Axelson

Edward M. Axelson, 92, of Wanamingo, died on May 16, 2012 at Angel's Care Center in Cannon Falls. He was born on April 15, 1920, in Red Wing, to Henry and Esther (Norell) Axelson. He grew up in Welch farming with the family. He attended country school in Welch and Red Wing High School. On November 18, 1942 he joined the US Army during WWII. He was stationed at Camp Shanks in New Jersey where he met and married Margaret Italiano on November 6, 1943 in Bergenfield, NJ. After his discharge they moved to South St. Pail and later to Welch where he started his business, Axelson Plumbing and Heating. In 1957 they moved to Wanamingo where he continued his business. While in Wanamingo he participated in the Volunteer Fire Department, Commercial Club and Lions Club. He helped build the Mid-Continental Gun Club of Welch and participated in men's softball in Welch. Edward was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Wanamingo. His other interests were gem faceting, hunting, fishing, boating and snowmobiling.
Edward is survived by his son, James (Donna) of Round Rock, Texas; daughter, Linda Bertram of Wanamingo; three grandsons and three great-grandchildren; one brother, Ken Axelson of Wanamingo; also nieces and nephews.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; sisters, Alice Holmes and Ilene Scrivner; brothers, Frank Axelson and Gilbert Axelson.
Funeral service will be 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Larson Chapel, in Zumbrota, with Pastor Christopher Culuris officiating. Private family burial will be in Cross of Christ Lutheran Church Cemetery in Welch. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 PM on Monday, May 21, 2012 and for one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
