Earl Collins Nelson, 101, of Red Wing, formerly of Vasa, died Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St. Crispin Living Community, Seminary Home. He was born on March 7, 1916, in Vasa Township, to Emil and Olive (Collins) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Vasa Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. On June 22, 1940, he married Lucile Nelson and the lived and farmed in Vasa Township for over 50 years. Lucile died September 18, 1979. On September 25, 1984, he married Harriet Peper. They traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the United States. They also enjoyed spending time at their home in Florida. They continued to live on the farm until 2008 when they moved to Red Wing. Harriet died on June 23, 2009. Earl was a former member of the Vasa Lutheran Church Council and Cemetery Board, Vasa Creamery Board, Vasa Township Board, Vasa ASC Committee, the Goodhue Pioneers, Goodhue Lions and the Red Wing Seniors.
Earl is survived by one step-daughter Trudy (Jim) Luman of Greensboro, NC; one step-son, Gary (Tamelyn) Peper of Bloomington; one brother, Robert (Betty Ann) Nelson of Minneapolis; numerous nieces and nephews; special friend, Lorraine Nelson of Red Wing and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Evelyn Erickson and two nephews.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2017, at Vasa Lutheran Church with Reverend Maureen Hagen officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, October, 26, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and at the church for one hour prior to the service.
