Earl O. Barstad

Earl Oliver Barstad, age 97 of Lake City, formerly of East Grand Forks, MN passed away Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the Lake City Nursing Home. He was born August 6, 1913 in Edmore, ND to Emil and Gina (Midboe) Barstad. He attended school in Edmore and worked for area farmers. Earl was drafted into the U.S. Army on April 21, 1941 at Fort Snelling, MN He went to Fort Lenard Wood, MO, then to Yuma, AZ, and his last stop was San Luis Obispo, CA. He left for overseas on Sept. 3, 1943 and served in the south pacific. Earl was honorably discharged from the army at Fort Lewis, WA on November 22, 1945. Earl returned to Edmore, ND then moved to Grand Forks, ND to work at the North Dakota Mill and Elevator from 1946 to 1978. During that time he met and married Mavis A. Smith on August 23, 1948. Earl and Mavis relocated to Lake City in October of 1997 due to losing their home in the great flood of 97. Mavis passed away January 17, 2006. He was a member of the VFW Post 3817, American Legion Post 157 in East Grand Forks, and the DAV Chapter 2 of Grand Forks. Earl loved to fish in his early retirement then turned to vegetable and flower gardening up to the age of 95.
Earl is survived by his four daughters, Candace (Don) Williams of Stanwood, WA, Reva (Ed) Vagt of Mazeppa, MN, Demaree Kehren of Lake City, MN and Margo Barstad of Lake City, MN; one sister, Gladys Price of Wilmette, IL; one brother, Glenn Barstad of Bowling Green, KY; three granddaughters; two grandson, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis; two brothers, and one sister.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in East Grand Forks with Reverend Luther Anderson officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at the Memorial Park South Cemetery in Grand Forks. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.
