Dwight L. Otten

October 20, 1954 — July 10, 2016

Dwight L. Otten, 61, of Red Wing, passed away Sunday morning, July 10, with his love Wendy by his side. He was born October 20, 1954 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Velmer and Donna (Hanson) Otten. He grew up in Valley Springs, South Dakota and graduated from Brandon Valley High School in 1972 before going on to become a licensed contractor and master craft homebuilder. He was part owner of Biegler-Otten Construction and raised his kids in Aberdeen before moving a few states east, eventually settling in Minnesota. He had two children, Brian and Sara and later in life was proud to call Wendy's girls, Kim and Marisa, his own.

Dwight grew up working for his family's sod business where he developed a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. His children remember he often worked two jobs to support his family. But Dwight found a lot of joy in helping people. No job was too big or too small. He was the kind of friend who was always available to help you and, like everything he did, he would do it with a smile. He was naturally charismatic and while working for RCC Construction, building beautiful custom homes, he was also able to form lasting friendships with his clients. When his career changed and he began working at Cochrane Recovery Services as the maintenance supervisor, he again was blessed to enjoy beautiful friendships with both his employer and his co-workers. Dwight was happiest outdoors and was a successful big game hunter. He also enjoyed the quiet times, watching eagles on the river and listening to the wind in the pine trees. He loved working on cars and recently he restored a red, 1963 Chevy Biscayne. He looked forward to sharing his progress and indulge in car talk on his nightly phone calls with his son, Brian. Many things will be missed about Dwight, including his bright blue eyes, his generous nature and "That's Awesome" attitude.

The greatest joy of Dwight's life was his love for the people in his life, especially his children and grandchildren.

He will be missed by the love of his life, Wendy; four children, Brian (Sylvia) Otten of Terrebonne, Org., Sara (Max) Szews of Elk Mound, Wisc., Kimberly (Jeff) Thompson of River Falls, Wisc. and Marisa (Tim) Schilling of Goodhue, Minn.; six grandchildren, Evan, JoAnna, Jacob, Ezekiel, Rolley and Leah; three brothers, Darold (Deb) of Iowa, Doug (Theresa) of South Dakota and Darwin of South Dakota; and one sister, Valerie (Den) Lape of South Dakota; nieces and nephews, other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Velmer and Donna; and Pops (Wendy's dad.)

A visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
