Dwain Allen Henry Diercks

Dwain Allen Henry Diercks, 84, of Red Wing died on Monday, July 1, 2013 at the Red Wing Health Center. He was born on May 6, 1929 to Erwin and Mabel Diercks. He grew up in Featherstone Township on his grandparent's farm. Growing up, he was a member of 4-H, played baseball and helped care for his six younger brothers. Dwain graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1947. In 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1953. He then took a job driving milk truck for Vasa Creamery. Later he was an auto mechanic at Jorgenson Chevrolet dealership. He later owned Dewey's Mobil service station. In 1966 he began working for Meyer Industries where he worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for 30 years before retiring in 1996. After retirement he worked part time at the Mississippi Links Golf Course. Dwain was a member of United Lutheran Church where he served on the church council and was an usher for more than 10 years. He loved music and supported his children's band and choir activities. He spent a lot of time outdoors, boating, cross country skiing, plowing snow and taking long walks. He will also be remembered as an excellent card player.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three children, Deborah Diercks of Austin, TX, Shelley (Deb) Diercks of Centerville, SD; and Jeffrey (Lynn) Diercks of Red Wing; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; five brothers, Glen (Audrey) Diercks of Red Wing, Donald (Julie) Diercks of Byron, Roger (Pat) Diercks of Red Wing, Burton (Doris) Diercks of Red Wing and Thomas (Carole) Diercks of Bay City, Wis. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Reynold Diercks.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 6, 2013 at United Lutheran Church with Pastor Justin Boeding officiating. Burial with military honors by the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54 will be at Oakwood cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, July 5, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with a Legion prayer service at 7 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at church. Memorials preferred to United Lutheran Church, Alzheimer's research or Faith in Action. Online condolences can be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
