Duane “Pete” E. Stelling, 89, of Red Wing, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2023 at Valentines Assisted Living in Red Wing.
He was born November 28, 1933 to Clarence and Ethel (Krause) Stelling in Lake City. Duane attended school in Red Wing until the age of 13. He started working at Jorgenson’s Chevrolet as a lube tech, then furthered his career as an Auto Body technician fixing and repairing cars. Whether it be repairing them or tearing them down and rebuilding them, it was there he discovered a life-long love for cars. Duane moved on from Jorgenson’s to working Albers Auto Boy in Red Wing for many years. In this time, he also started working at the SB Foot Tannery where he worked tirelessly for 32 years.
Duane enjoyed working on cars with friends and going to car shows, especially the “Back to the Fifties Car Show.” In addition to his enthusiasm for cars he also deeply loved his two daughters and grandsons, who were his pride and joy.
Duane is survived by his daughters, Robin Murphy and Kimberly Stemen; and a very special grandson, Adam (Jessica) Stemen, who inherited his love for cars. He is further survived by 4 grandsons, Nikolaas (Thera) Murphy, Matthew Murphy, Mackenzie Stemen, and Ian Stemen; 5 great-grandchildren, Ty Murphy, Reagan Murphy, Layla Murphy, Hunter Stemen, and Archer Stemen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rollie; sisters, Marcene Thompson, Ruth (David) Oellrich, Deanna (Charlie) Becker; nephews, Gary Thompson and Scott Whipple.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery in Lake City. A special THANKS to the staff at Valentines Assisted Living in Red Wing and St. Croix Hospice. Duane received such great care from them and gained a few daughters along the way. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
