Duane Ahti Karjala

Duane Ahti Karjala, 65, of Red Wing, passed away Monday, September 2, 2013. He was born June 20, 1948 in Manistee, Michigan to Dr. Ahti and Selma (Lantto) Karjala. Duane was married to Mary Beach in 1969 and graduated from Michigan Technical University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1972. Duane served four years in the U.S. Air Force and enjoyed a thirty-five year career in the Nuclear Power industry. After retirement, Duane proudly dedicated time to the Red Wing Area Food Shelf and served on their Board of Directors. Duane received numerous awards during his military service and throughout his career. Duane was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather with a passion for running and riding motorcycles. Duane was a true American patriot.
He is survived by his; wife, Mary; daughters, Teresa (Thomas) Warren, Sally (Demian) Werner; and five grandchildren, Peyton, Cody, Max, Mary Madison and Molly; mother, Selma; five brothers and one sister. He is preceded in death by his father, Ahti.
Memorial service will be 1 p.m, Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn chapel. A visitation will be one half hour prior to the service. A reception is to follow at Marie's Underground Grill and Tap House. Burial will be at a later date in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Memorials preferred to the Red Wing Area Food Shelf.
