Douglas A. Benoit

March 1, 2026 — December 22, 2010

Douglas Benjamin Benoit March 1, 1926-December 22, 2010
Douglas Benoit age 84 of Lake City passed away December 22, 2010 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, N.C.

Douglas was a mover and a doer, a man of passion, principle, and faith. From his childhood in Gary, Indiana, through 3 years as a seminarian at Sacred Heart High School in Fort Wayne and continuing throughout his life, his Catholic faith provided the foundation of his being. Douglas met the love of his life, Jacqueline Kollars, in Omaha, NB in 1945. Three months later they were married on a two week leave and embarked on a 65 year union, moving throughout the middle of the U.S. from the Mexican border to the Canadian one landing eventually in Minnesota. They had four daughters, wonderful to their eyes.

He had many passions...the Catholic Cursillo movement, Montessori education, organic gardening, the Latin Mass. Having grown up on the shores of Lake Michigan and spent his Air Force years mainly in Guam and the Philipines, he loved water: boats, water sking, and especially fishing- an avocation for many years. If the fishing involved going off in a camper van, all the better. He had a keen sense of doing for others. He helped settle Vietnamese and Bosnian immigrants in Lake city, MN. During his "retirement" he and Jackie spent a year teaching young children in the mountains of Guatemala. Later he made frequent trips to Belize doing volunteer carpentry on churches and schools. He was always ready to help someone re-roof their house or move a garage to a new location. He loved food and feeding people, especially offering his homemade pies, cakes and, cookies. Douglas' "day jobs" over the years included radio operator (in the Air Force), salesman, tenant farmer, journeyman carpenter, Border Patrol agent, Montessori teacher of 3-6 year old children and speaker on Montessori education.

He was a thinking man, with intense opinions. He was a joyful man, full of ideas, action, jokes, stories, picnics. In Jackie's last years Doug saw her through the ravages of Alzheimers, finding joy still while sitting with her at the nursing home. After her death last summer he was again full of plans for travel and one more adventure.

He is survived by daughters Carrie Benoit of Durham, NC; Tyrene Johnston of Sharon, MA; Joan Lizaola of Dundas, MN; and Jackie Foley of Rochester, MN; siblings Margie Wilson, Edward Benoit, Betty Lou Martin, Joan McGowan, Mark Benoit; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grand children. He was preceded in death by his wife Jacqueline who passed away July 17, 2010.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City with Father Richard Dernek officiating. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 7 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. There will be a Rosary Service at 6:30 PM.
