Douglas Eugene Ahrendt, 54, of Red Wing, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital following a brief illness. He was born June 22, 1955 in Vermillion, South Dakota to Leo and Alice (Lawrence) Ahrendt. His family moved to Red Wing in 1963 and he graduated from Red Wing Central High in 1973. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1975 and was discharged in 1978. On July 3, 1975, he married Susan Lynner and they lived in Red Wing. He worked for his father at the Burnside Market and later began working at the Red Wing Shoe Factory, where he had been employed for the past 20 years. He belonged to the Mount Frontenac Tuesday Night Golf League and had served as the league's secretary for many years. He was also a past league bowler and had been in church softball leagues. As a Vikings and Twins fan, he enjoyed watching sports and he also loved spending time with his grandson, Isaac.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of Red Wing; a son, Jesse Ahrendt of Bradenton, Fla.; daughter, Andrea (Jay) Ahrendt of Red Wing; grandson, Isaac; father-in-law, Marchand Lynner of Red Wing; brother, Garry Ahrendt of Arizona; 2 sisters, Lynn Ahrendt of Menomonie, Wisc., and Cathy (Don) Averbeck of Hugo, Minn.; sister-in-law, Connie (Scott) Jablonske of Red Wing and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Billy and James; his parents, and his mother-in-law, Helen Lynner.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel with Reverend Rick Grams officiating, with military honors to follow. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service on Monday.
