Dorothy I. Weis age 88, of Pine Island, died on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at Pine Haven Care Center in Pine Island. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 7, 2019 at 11:00 am at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island with Pastor Darby Lawrence officiating. The visitation will be on Thursday, June 6, 2019 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Pine Island and for one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial will be in the Pine Island Cemetery. Arrangements were made with Mahn Family Funeral Home - Mahler Chapel.
Dorothy Ilene Rossi was born on February 26, 1931 on a farm near Byron, Minnesota. Her parents were Joseph and Marjorie (Closner) Rossi. Growing up, Dorothy and her family moved several times, renting farms in the Byron and Pine Island area. She attended country school and graduated from Pine Island High School in 1948. Dorothy went to work as a bookkeeper in the Mail Order Department at Montgomery Wards in Rochester. Shortly thereafter she was promoted to Department Manager.
On September 22, 1949, she married Wilford Weis at Saint Paul Lutheran Church. They lived in Zumbrota and she worked as a telephone operator until they rented a farm in 1950 in Olmsted County. In 1957, Wilford and Dorothy purchased a farm in Dodge County and continued to grow their dairy operation, and purchased a neighboring farm in 1973. They lived on the farm until moving to Pine Island in 1985. Dorothy handled all of the bookwork for the farm and also for Wilford's Pioneer seed corn business. Dorothy was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church, the Milton Moms Home Ext., 4H Adult Leaders, Lydia Circle, WELCA, Pine Haven Aux., Pine Island Food Shelf and Meals on Wheels. She also volunteered by driving people to church, doctor appointments and even opening her home to a friend who needed a place to stay after the flood in Pine Island.
Dorothy enjoyed working on the farm, baking (especially chocolate chip cookies), playing cards with the Happy Go Lucky Club, going to her high school reunions and especially visiting with family and friends.
Dorothy is survived by her children Joseph (Donna) Weis of Baraboo, WI, and Julie (Paul) Klein of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Kory (Sara) Weis, Kylene (Ron) Prestcott, Kelly (Chas) Hill, Philip (Kayla) Klein, and Jana (Daniel) Cinnamon; two step-grandchildren, Melissa and John Howard; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Elaine Kohrs of Lake City, and many nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Wilford, who passed away on February 25, 1998; son, Jerald who passed away on April 25, 1999; four brothers, Ralph, Ray, Caryl, and Willis "Rex"; four sisters, Helen Goodman, Gertrude Wilson, Joyce Postier, and Vera Campbell.
Memorials are preferred to Saint Paul Lutheran Church, Pine Haven Auxiliary and Pine Island Schools.
