Dorothy Belo Smith

Dorothy "Dottie" Belo Smith, age 86, of Rochester, died April 3, 2018. Dorothy was born 1931 in Johnson City, NY, where she lived her early life. She graduated from Johnson City High School in 1949 and attended Rochester Institute of Technology, class of 1952 with a degree in Dietetics. There she met and would, in 1952, marry Richard Smith, who worked for IBM. She took a job at Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton NY as Head Dietitian. In 1955 the couple moved to Rochester, MN with an IBM job transfer. Richard and Dorothy raised 3 sons on Riverside Lane in Rochester, Minnesota. Dorothy took a job with Methodist Hospital at the Mayo Clinic and worked there for 33 years. She enjoyed cooking and hosting dinner parties at home. Travel was also an important part of her life. The family built a Barnswood cabin in Grand Marais.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Richard Smith; and their 3 sons, Douglas Smith of Kalispell, MT; David Smith of Redlands, CA; and Bradley Smith of Fort Collins, CO. Grandchildren include Jessica Shawcross, Kelly Smith, Laura Smith, Emmett Smith and Jacob Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 sisters.

A Memorial Gathering will be held at Homestead of Rochester from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday April 7, 2018.
