Dorothy M. Sifferath, 90, of Rochester, died Tuesday April 19, 2011 at Madonna Towers Skilled Care Facility.

Dorothy Margaret Douglas was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on August 19, 1920, to Willard and Ethel (Bengston) Douglas. She grew up in Buffalo Lake, Minnesota and attended Buffalo Lake High School, graduating in 1938. Dorothy worked as a nurse's aide at Northern Pacific Hospital in Saint Paul. On November 17, 1942 she was united in marriage to Harvey Harold Sifferath in Buffalo Lake. During World War II Dorothy trained as an air traffic controller, working in Detroit for American Airlines. Following the war she and Harvey moved to Homer, Minnesota. Harvey owned and operated Harvey's Pure Oil station until 1975. Besides being a homemaker, Dorothy did the business bookkeeping and accounting. They were longtime members of the Winona Church of the Nazarene. In 1997 they moved to Rochester to be near their daughter and family.

Dorothy was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She excelled as a cook and baker, keeping a garden from which she froze and canned her produce. She loved to sew clothing for the family, making many clothes for herself, Gloria, and Crystal. She also knit and crocheted numerous afghans for friends and family. Throughout her life she enjoyed spending time on the Mississippi River fishing. Though she had suffered many health problems over the years, she was always striving to overcome them. Dorothy set a great example with her work ethic and strong faith in God. She will be deeply missed.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Gloria (Quentin) Schmierer of Rochester, Minnesota; a granddaughter, Crystal (Jeffrey) Hedman of New Brighton, Minnesota; a sister, Lois (Richard) Dole of Seven Lakes, North Carolina; her aunt, Doris (William) Dorning of San Francisco, California; and a sister-in-law, Irma (Harry) Sifferath of Hector, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Sifferath, and sister, MaryEllen (Arden) Adams.

A funeral is scheduled for Sunday May 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM at the Winona Church of the Nazarene, 469 Orrin Street, Winona, Minnesota, with Rev. Pat Thomas officiating. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Saturday April 30th at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel, 1624 37th Street NW, and one hour before the service at the church on Sunday.

Memorials are suggested to the Winona Church of the Nazarene, the Nazarene Well House in Rochester, or the family.
