Dorothy M. Neidig

May 25, 1927 — March 26, 2020

Dorothy Mae Neidig, 92, died Thursday, March 26, 2020, at Deercrest, in Red Wing, Minnesota. Dorothy was born May 25, 1927, in Antigo, Wisconsin, to Frank and Mary (Hogenson) Beckman. She was the youngest of three children. After graduating high school in Manitowoc she attended St. Olaf College where she earned a teaching certificate and became a kindergarten teacher. She married David Martin in 1946, and they settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where they raised four children, Sheila, Nancy, Maryellen, and Steven. Dorothy and David were happily married for 46 years before David passed away in 1990. She met Leonard Neidig, through volunteer work with St. Stephens Episcopal Church where they were later married in 1994. Dorothy and Leonard built a home in Wacouta, overlooking Lake Pepin, in 2003. Living on the Mississippi River provided a great environment for Dorothy's passion for bird watching. Dorothy also took immense pride in being a mother, homemaker, and a gifted cook. Her grandchildren were especially lucky to receive regular treats of cookies and homemade bread. Dorothy was a great supporter of the arts, raising her children in an art-rich environment and taking classes to develop her own talents. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing tennis, a hobby she and David did year-round thanks to winters spent in Naples, Florida. Dorothy is remembered as a loving, compassionate and nurturing mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She exemplified kindness and generosity, always ready with a smile and an encouraging word.
Dorothy volunteered her time with the Women's Auxiliary for Children's Hospital in Minneapolis as a board member and fundraiser, and with Hennepin County Medical Center's patient enrichment program. She was a volunteer with the Guthrie Theatre, and member of the Philharmonic Book Club of Naples, Florida. She was also a member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Edina, Minnesota.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister Helen, her brother Johnny, her daughter Sheila Galvin, her son-in-law Michael McKay, her first husband David, and her second husband Leonard. She is survived by her children Nancy McKay, Maryellen (Eric) Trehus, and Steven (Angie) Martin; son-in-law Larry (Sheila) Galvin; grandchildren Melissa (Mark) Gathman, Casey (Dane) Ball, Molly (Dan) Steffen, Evan (Matt) Wetzel, David (Jessica) McKay, Brigit Trehus and Ethan Trehus; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Leonard's family, including Margaret (Jeff) Stewart; granddaughters, Anne (David) Cooke and Elizabeth (Doug) Briese, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Dorothy's family would like to thank DeerCrest Assisted Living for their incredible support and care of both Dorothy and Leonard throughout the past two years.
A private interment will be held for family and a celebration of Dorothy and Leonard's life will be held at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.mahnfamilyfuneralhome.com
